A friend of mine asked me the other night what kind of photography gear I have. I told him Canon with a bunch of model numbers but he was confounded and overwhelmed. I told him I made the difficult (and expensive) decision last year to switch and upgrade from Nikon to Canon because of the introduction of the full-frame 5D Mark II. My Nikon equipment was fine consumer-grade SLR gear but I had reached a plateau in what I could do photography-wise due to the limitations of the consumer body and glass. With either Nikon or Canon it would take a significant investment to upgrade so I did my homework, read as much as I could about the two company’s offerings and realized that Canon offered a better prosumer (I hate that word)/ professional-consumer line of lenses and the introduction of the 5D Mark II they put out a better (my opinion) offering to this niche than Nikon. It’s basically an arms race but I think Canon has the lead in this segment right now.
I told him I’d send my POTN (photography on the net) gear list which is the most complete list of my equipment. At that point he still didn’t get it. I told him I’d develop an overview of body and lenses with some reliable reviews of each and stick it into my blog.
